The avant-jazz-funk trio Medeski, Martin & Wood—John Medeski on keyboards, Billy Martin on drums, and Chris Wood on bass—returned to their acoustic roots on the relaxed 1999 live album "Tonic," recorded in an intimate venue on New York's Lower East Side. The set featured the trio's adventurous original compositions alongside covers of songs by Lee Morgan, Bud Powell, John Coltrane, and Jimi Hendrix. And yes, it's funky!
