Since Bill Callahan became a happy, married, and father, his music has taken a new turn. His baritone voice deepens with each album. All haste is gone. The autobiographical details have gradually increased. "My Days of 58" was meant to have a living room atmosphere, though it could also have been recorded on his porch. It's an album like a gently swaying rocking chair. Callahan imagines himself an old man: both his parents are deceased; he was diagnosed with (and recovered from) cancer; his children are no longer toddlers. It all shines through in the lyrics, as beautiful as he hasn't written them in years; perhaps more vulnerable than ever. That's the main draw, but the brass section and idiosyncratic percussion of Jim White (Dirty Three) are just as worthwhile.
