Bruce Springsteen has a reputation to uphold. Sure, he's had the occasional flop, but compared to, say, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, he's never made huge leaps that his fans couldn't follow. No " Trans ," no "Christmas in the Heart ," so to speak. Maybe "Nebraska ," whatever. But Tracks II: The Lost Albums is full of such leaps, especially from the nineties. Entire albums that Springsteen was afraid to release, that have been the subject of speculation for decades, and that now, surprise surprise , turn out to be a treasure trove.
Inyo is a beautiful, intimate country record, inspired by the culture of Mexican immigrants in the American Southwest (currently!). Faithless is the soundtrack to a "spiritual western" that was never made—with some beautiful, atmospheric instrumentals. Also very 90s: the Streets of Philadelphia Sessions , long known only as "the loops album": It's Bruce who starts with some rickety drum tracks and then creates some beautiful, almost trip-hop-like things with them. Plenty of surprises, then, at least some of which can be found on the compilation: Lost and Found: Selections from the Lost Albums.
