CHALINO SANCHEZ – NIEVES DE ENERO
'Sometimes It Snows In April' sang Prince. Chalino Sanchez sings about the snow in January – 'Nieves De Enero'. This 1992 album is a legendary collection of corridos , narrative ballads that report on the grim reality of rural Mexico at the end of the 20th century. Songs like 'El Crimen de Culiacán', 'Hermanos Matas' and 'Ramoncito Quiñonez' are raw and true stories of cartel violence, family feuds and murder. An album that really has something to say, although the upbeat music of his backing band Los Amabeles del Norte sounds cheerful. How raw the album is, is proven by the fact that in January 1992, the year 'Nieves De Enero' was released, an attack was committed during a performance. Sanchez was hit, returned fire and accidentally killed someone in the audience, but survived. Later that year, just after a performance in Culiacán, it happened again. During the performance, Sanchez is handed a note. It contains a threat. Sanchez wipes the sweat from his head, swallows, doesn't know what to do for a moment, but pulls himself together and continues with the performance, despite the knowledge that he won't survive the evening.
Although the murder remains unsolved, it is likely the Mexican cartel that carried out the attack.
Sometimes it snows in January.
