Emma-Jean Thackray sought solace in joy. The British jazz musician struggled with her mental health for years, and in 2023, her partner suddenly passed away. She openly addresses all these issues on Weirdo , but the weighty lyrics are paired with a surprisingly cheerful jazz-funk sound. In her home studio, Thackray draws on Afrobeat, p-funk, and hip-hop—so the world can dance to her grief. Only Reggie Watts and Kassa Overall will be visiting.
