Tishoumaren—desert blues in common parlance—isn't a genre that's often reinvented. And it doesn't need to be. It's all about the depth—and on Essam digs Imarhan Deeper than ever in the hot sand. The group from the Algerian oasis town of Tamanrasset has brought in a French producer, Emile Papandreou, who has added an atmospheric layer of synths. Perhaps they're not in a pit after all, but in a cloud, just above the Sahara.
