The Black Dog and the Wandering Boy is teeming with broken souls and evil people. A South Texas police officer, George W. Bush, the Hardcore Trump supporter . These are the types James McMurtry embodies with verve, perhaps because the roots-rock veteran himself sounds a bit broken on his umpteenth album. All those tragic stories are wrapped in a familiar, bitter sound, gruff with dust. It rusts and smells of gasoline and tear gas.
