When the avant-prog boys from Black Midi called it quits in 2024, bassist Cameron Picton's greatest wish was to make a singer-songwriter album. That didn't quite work out. The self-titled debut from My New Band Believe is indeed entirely acoustic (and Picton proves himself to be a very gifted lyricist) – it still (fortunately) goes in a thousand directions. Chamber pop adventures are interspersed with psychedelic excursions where a whole orchestra sometimes appears out of nowhere.
