Had Nick Drake 's debut album Too many bells and whistles? Those who think not (and are ultimately right) are given a bit of second thoughts by The Making of Five Leaves Left . We hear songs like 'Strange Face' and 'Time Has Told Me' in stripped-down versions; sometimes painfully intimate arrangements, the kind Drake only managed to pull off with Pink Moon . Strings and congas made Drake fly—it's a wonder the album wasn't a success at the time. But he never really needed more than a piano and a guitar. Or did he?
