When Nubya Garcia was still the frontwoman of Maisha - remember? - various influences were already seeping through her grooving jazz; surf rock, r&b, Latin American styles, you could hear it between the lines. On her acclaimed debut and breakthrough album 'Source' and excellent remix album 'Source + We Move' the influences were even richer; cumbia, dub, funk, dance and hip hop made their entrance. Or as she herself says: "Because I grew up with Herbie Hancock that doesn't mean that I don't also like Mary J. Blige.' On 'Odyssey' the symphonic aspect will mainly come to the fore. Symphonic music with a groove. The connoisseur of her work will not be surprised that this hybrid form is also back on 'Odyssey' to hear. A cinematic album featuring guest appearances by Esperanza Spalding and Giorgia Anne Muldrow and the Chineke! Orchestra. And, let's just call a spade a spade, a genreless album.
