Location is everything in Americana. On Planting By The Signs, you can almost smell the Mississippi, feel the oppressive heat of the tiny town of Hickman, Kentucky, and see the snapping turtles teeming around you. SG Goodman has the husky warmth of Lucinda Williams, but writes with the narrative pen of Hold Steady singer Craig Finn. And so her memories of Hickman feel vivid. The melancholic, largely acoustic arrangements contribute significantly to this, as does the voice of Goodman's fellow countrywoman Bonnie "Prince" Billy, who emerges as if from the mist on 'Nature's Child.'
